The Skytrain

Below is a map of the Skytrain and Metro (underground) which also shows where the interchange stations are. I have listed a few sights that are located close by some of the stations, although this list is not exhaustive!

Skytrain and Underground map

Silom Line

Saphan Taksin - This stop is most useful for getting to the Taksin pier for the River Express boats. These boats can take you up to the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun on the other side of the river. Also close by are the Shangri-La and Oriental hotels.

Surasak - The Blue Elephant cookery school is a few blocks behind this station. The Myanmar embassy is also close by.

Chong Nonsi - There aren't many sights around here, but Lek Seafood restaurant is very nice and there is a Thai Airways office is close to this station.

Sala Daeng - Drops you off at the infamous Patpong street for the go-go bars and night market. There are lots of international shops and restaurants around here and it's a short walk to Lumpini Park and the Suan Lum Night Bazaar. This is a connection of sorts to the Silom underground station.

Ratchadamri - Again close to Lumpini Park. Also the Cambodian embassy is a 10 minute walk.

Siam - This is the interchange station to get onto the Sukhumvit Line. There are lots of shopping centres around here (Siam, Siam Discovery, Siam Paragon, Siam Square and more). Siam Paragon contains the Ocean World Aquarium. All of Bangkok's major shopping centres boast good food courts and cinemas.

National Stadium - As the name suggests, the National Stadium is located here! Also Jim Thompson's house is a short walk away (and signposted). The huge MBK shopping centre has a direct link into the station also.

Sukhumvit Line

Mo Chit - Chatuchak Weekend Market is right by this station, the largest outdoor market in the world. You can buy pretty much anything here. Also, Chatuchak Park makes for a pleasant walk and is popular with joggers. This station is close by to Chatuchak underground station.

Saphan Khwai - No real sights of interest around here, just apartments and shops!

Ari - As above

Sanam Pao - As above

Victory Monument - The small but pleasant Peace Park is about 10-15 minutes walk east of this station. The Victory Monument itself is of limited interest, but as it's in the middle of a traffic roundabout is probably not worth the risk getting to! Phaya Thai palace is a nice retreat for an hour or two, on Ratchwithi Road.

Phaya Thai - Suan Pakkad Palace is a nice peaceful retreat and a pleasant way to spend a few hours in the midst of Bangkok's hustle and bustle. It is about 10 minutes walk eastwards along Sri Ayuthaya Road. A bit further away are Wat Benjamabophit (the marble temple) and Wat Indrawihan which contains a massive standing Buddha.

Ratchthewi - This station boasts a direct connection into the affordable Asia Hotel

Siam - Interchange station, see above

Chit Lom - More shopping! There are direct connections into Erawan, Gaysorn and Central shopping centres, also across the road is Central World Plaza. Many international hotels congregate in this area. Of more interest is the Erawan shrine which draws huge crowds of devotees. Worth a quick stop off.

Ploen Chit - More shops and embassies in this mainly commercial area.

Nana - The entertainment centre of Sukhumvit, boasting Nana Plaza and its girlie bars and Nana night market. The excellent Bumrungrad hospital is close by, should you need it.

Asok - An interchange of sorts with Sukhumvit underground station. More hotels and shops are in this area along with another famous night spot, Soi Cowboy.

Phrom Pong - Has a direct link into Emporium shopping centre and is close to the Queen Sirikit/Benjasiri park.

Thong Lo - This is an up and coming trendy area, with lots of bars and clubs.

Ekkamai - This station is most used as access to the Eastern Bus Terminal.

Phra Khanong - No real sights of interest in this mainly residential area.

On Nut - The end of the line, close to Central department store and connected to a Tesco Lotus supermarket.
