Muay Thai, Thai boxing (kickboxing) is the traditional sport of Thailand. Fighters undergo years of training with their mentors and are respected in Thailand for their skills and dedication. The fights can be pretty brutal, fighters often finish with scratch marks and heavy bruising from the kicks received, not to mention the punches! Before each bout, the two fighters perform a sort of dance (called Ram Muay) which lasts about five minutes and involves them moving around the ring making movements in time with the ringside music. This is to pay respect to their trainers and is actually part of the rules of Muay Thai. The atmosphere inside Lumpini stadium is always lively, but as each fight reaches its climax the atmosphere becomes electric as each punch or kick is cheered and always backed up by the sound of bets being placed!
