This is one of the most famous sights of Thailand, along with the Grand Palace and the picture perfect beaches. It is a unique experience and one worth having. For a Westerner it is slighty unreal as you are steered through the narrow canals being shouted at by traders and stopping off to buy fruit, clothes, souvenirs and more.
The character of these markets has changed somewhat as a large number of boats are used for guided tours. But this market remains as a legitimate trading post as well as selling the usual souvenirs. There are similar markets in Bangkok but Damnoen Saduak retains more of its character.
This market is one and a half hours drive from Bangkok, coach tours operate here. There are many tours on offer when you arrive.
The journey is fairly interesting as you pass through agricultural areas, mainly producing salt. This is another great day out.
