Bangkok

Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand is a relatively new city. Even so it is still packed full of history, all this combined with the hussle and bussle of modern life makes it a bewildering place to visit. Bangkok is not the most beautiful city in the world. A lot of the buildings are dull and uninspiring. Towers blocks and Western style shopping centres are interspersed with abandoned skeletons of buildings (remants of the economy crash). The roads are poorly laid out and the traffic and pollution is bad. However, if you can overlook the aesthetics of the city you will discover a fascinating and genuinely friendly place. There are several distinct districts like Chinatown, Sukhumvit the tourist and expat area, the commercial sector of Silom and Sathorn Roads, Dusit the home of Thai government and many examples of traditional Thai buildings. Travelling around some parts of the city has been made easier by the introduction of the Skytrain and Underground systems. See seperate sections in the left menu for maps and advice on what to see near some of the stations. The main tourist sights are the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaeo (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), Wat Pho, Chatuchak weekend market, Jim Thompson's House and the views from Baiyoke Tower. There are many other sights as well as markets and endless rows of shopping centres and smaller shops. See links in the left menu for photos of the many sights of Bangkok. Also not to be missed is the river view of Bangkok. You can charter your own boat for a tour, or jump on the Chao Phraya river express. Whatever you do in Bangkok you'll be sure to have a great holiday.
